Forest Education Network for England (FENE) provides Cambium Sustainable with funding for heavily subsidised Curriculum Based Outdoor Learning training in England.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Forestry Commission, the Forest Education Network for England (FENE) has teamed up with Cambium Sustainable to provide training courses by their Associate Trainers across five different locations in England.

Co-Director Sam Goddard of Cambium Sustainable says “Curriculum Based Outdoor Learning has traditionally been most popular in Primary and Early-Years settings. This valuable funding will support those working with young people to get outdoors and enjoy the multiple benefits that woodland learning spaces can offer. We’re really excited to be supporting this initiative and offering training to upskill and support the sector”

Becky Wilkinson, Chair Forest Education Network for England says “This course has the potential to transform the learning experiences of the schools that will be taking part. Our young people need opportunities to learn outdoors more than ever before and this is a valuable opportunity to take a step in the right direction.”

This training equips leaders to take groups of young people into woods and forests within their communities. Our forests are a valuable learning environment where children can discover what is around them.

Learners will:

  • Develop an understanding of the benefits and risks of using the outdoors as a learning environment, looking at the background and context of modern outdoor learning

  • How to take a holistic approach to implementing Outdoor Learning at your setting, and how to get everyone ‘on board’ with your plans

  • Plan and deliver seasonal Curriculum Based Outdoor Learning

Funding criteria:

  • Working in an English School, College or Woodland Organisation

  • Do not currently have a Level 2 or above Outdoor Learning or Forest School qualification

  • Work with at least one group aged 11–16 who you plan to implement the training with

  • Our organisation has a woodland space available for Outdoor Learning OR There is public woodland within walking distance that I plan to visit with my group after the training
